How to use the keyboard tester
- Click the page once so it receives your key presses.
- Press each key. It turns solid while held and stays highlighted once tested.
- Hold several keys together to test rollover. Gaming keyboards handle 6 or more. Many office keyboards drop keys after 2 or 3, which is called ghosting.
- Watch for repeats in the history. A key that types twice when pressed once has a worn switch or dirt under it.
Some keys never reach a web page: the Fn key, media keys on many laptops, and system shortcuts such as Alt+Tab or Ctrl+Alt+Delete. That is normal and doesn't mean they are broken.
Keyboard test questions
How do I test my keyboard online?
Click this page, then press each key. Every key you press lights up on the map and shows its name and code. Keys that don't light up may be broken.
What is keyboard ghosting?
Ghosting is when a keyboard misses key presses because too many keys are held at once. Hold several keys together here. The Most keys at once figure shows how many your keyboard can register.
Why doesn't the Fn key show up?
The Fn key is handled inside the keyboard and never sent to the computer, so no website can detect it.
